Behavioural strategies for a pollen allergy

01. January 2025

Millions of people worldwide get hay fever. Experts believe that climate change will require sufferers to prepare for longer and, in some cases, more intense pollen seasons.

Most children develop an allergy to pollen while still at nursery school. However, a pollen allergy can develop at any point in life.

An itchy palate, sneezing, watery eyes, a runny or blocked nose and breathing difficulties – these symptoms usually occur in spring when birch, hazel and alder trees are in bloom, but depending on the type of pollen, they can also start as early as January or continue into autumn.

Taking antihistamines early on and keeping an eye on the pollen count calendar helps you prepare for the pollen season and alleviate symptoms.

Best practices for managing the pollen season

  • Limit the time you spend outdoors
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from allergens
  • Exercise inside instead of outside
  • Dry laundry indoors
  • Short bursts of ventilation
  • Pollen screens on windows
  • Do not hang worn clothes in the bedroom
  • Wash your hair before bedtime
  • Use air purifiers
  • Use neo-angin protect spray several times a day to protect against allergens and moisturise the mucosa in the mouth and throat

The following pollens can cause itchy palates

Hazel,  alder, ash, poplar, birch,  grasses, chestnut, oak and beech.

Where does a pollen allergy come from?

Our immune system protects us every day against viruses, bacteria, allergens and fungi. In individuals with allergies, the immune system mistakenly identifies proteins in pollen as harmful.
